# How to record general company expenses in Dumpster Controls

Not every expense belongs to one order. The Expenses tab of the Expenses page tracks general company spending (fuel, repairs, insurance, driver pay, office and more), now with driver, truck and receipt on each entry, and feeds it into the dashboard's Expenses number.

## Before you start

- Open Finances and click the "Expenses" pill, then the "Expenses" tab.
- Admin or dispatcher role to add, edit or delete entries.

1. ## Click "Add Expense"
The dialog asks for "Type" (Fuel, Driver labor, Repairs & maintenance, Licenses & permits, Tools, Tolls, Insurance, Office, Software, Marketing, Payroll & admin, Taxes, or Other), "Amount", "Date", and optionally a "Driver", a "Truck", a "Description" and a "Vendor". Use "Attach receipt" to store the receipt file (PDF or photo, up to 10 MB) in private storage. The "Recurring" toggle makes the expense repeat: the app records a copy automatically on the same day of each following month. Click "Save Expense".
2. ## Edit or delete an entry
Each row has a pencil to edit every field (including replacing the receipt) and a trash icon that asks for confirmation before deleting. The paperclip icon opens the stored receipt in a new tab.
3. ## Filter the list
Use the date presets (7 Days, 30 Days, This Month, All Time, calculated in your company's timezone), the type filter, and the driver filter to see, for example, everything you spent on one driver in a month.
4. ## Read the Overview tab
The "Overview" tab is the command center for everything going out: "Total spending" for the period (the same number as the dashboard's Expenses tile) with its change versus the previous period and the split between order costs and general expenses; a "Needs your action" list (bank transactions without a destination, drivers with pay to settle, completed orders with no costs); "Where the money went", combining order costs and general expenses by category with an on-orders versus general bar; a 6-month trend; and the "Labor cost per driver" card.

## What happens next

- These expenses are included in the Finances dashboard's "Expenses" tile and net profit alongside your per-order job costs.
- A recurring expense generates its monthly copy automatically; turn the toggle off on the original entry to stop future copies.

## Troubleshooting

### The receipt upload fails.

Receipts are limited to 10 MB and to PDF or image files. Compress the file or take a new photo and attach it again.

### The page shows "No company expenses yet".

Nothing has been recorded for the selected filters. Add general expenses like fuel, maintenance, and insurance; these are not linked to any specific order.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Dumpster Controls really free?

Yes. The software is free: dispatch, online booking, the driver app, invoicing, the Tresha AI assistant and every other feature, with no monthly fee, no trial period and no credit card to sign up. The only cost on the free plan is optional card processing when a customer pays by card through the platform: 2.99% plus $3.99 per transaction on the free plan. An optional Unlimited plan at $169 per month lowers that to 2.99% plus $0.30. Prices as published on dumpstercontrols.io/pricing on 2026-09-23.

### Do you charge per driver, per truck or per order?

No. There is no per-driver, per-truck, per-user or per-order fee, and no order limit. A company with one truck and a company with twenty pay the same for the software: nothing.

### Is there a contract?

No. There is no contract, no minimum term and no setup fee. You create the account yourself, and on the free plan there is nothing to cancel because nothing is billed. The optional Unlimited plan is billed month to month.

### Which countries and languages are supported?

Dumpster Controls serves hauling companies in the United States and Canada. The app interface and the Tresha AI assistant are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The public pages, such as the blog, the help center and the landfill finder, are in English.

### How do I switch from another dumpster software?

Create a free account at dumpstercontrols.io/login, with no sales call and no credit card. Then import your customers from a CSV file using the template provided in the app; past orders can also be imported from a CSV. Container sizes and pricing are set up in Settings. The landfill database, with 1,750 active US and Canadian landfills as counted on 2026-10-01, is already loaded, so disposal sites do not need to be typed in. Step-by-step guides are at dumpstercontrols.io/help.
