# How saved cards work in Dumpster Controls: charge a card on file, check a pending charge, remove a card

When a customer pays online (online booking or a payment link) or you take their card by phone, Stripe can keep the card so you can charge it again later, for example for a repeat order, extra days or an overweight fee. Dumpster Controls keeps a record of that card on the customer's profile in your company: brand, last four digits, expiration date and where it came from. The card number itself is stored by Stripe, never on our servers.

## Before you start

- Stripe is connected for your company.
- The customer paid you by card before (online booking, payment link or card by phone) and the card was saved.
- You are an admin, supervisor or dispatcher. Drivers never see or charge saved cards.

1. ## See the saved card on the customer
Open the customer from "Customers". The "Saved card" section shows each card as, for example, "Visa •••• 4242 · exp 08/28 · Saved Aug 19 via online booking". The default card (the one charged) comes first. A card blocked by the bank or by a dispute shows the reason and is never offered again.
2. ## Charge a card on file when creating an order
In "Create New Order", pick the customer. If they have a saved card, "Charge card on file" appears in "Select Payment Method" with the card below it. It is never selected for you. Choose it, click the create button (for example "Create Delivery Order"), pick who pays the card fee (the default comes from your Online Booking settings) and click "Create order & charge card".
3. ## Review the exact amount and charge
The order is created first and nothing is sent to the customer yet. A window shows the exact amount (including the card fee when the customer pays it) and the card. Tick the two confirmations and click "Charge". For an older card taken by phone, also confirm that the customer agreed today that you may keep and charge the card.
4. ## If the card is declined
Nothing is charged and the card is not tried again for that invoice. Choose "Send payment link" (the customer gets the invoice with a link to pay) or "Collect manually (cash, check, Zelle)". The window does not close until you choose, because the order already exists.
5. ## Charge a saved card later from Order History
Expand the order in "Order History" and click "Charge Card on File". The window shows the exact amount that will be charged, including the card fee when the customer pays it. If the amount changes while the window is open, nothing is charged and you are asked to review again.
6. ## When a payment is not confirmed yet
Sometimes the bank takes a moment to answer. You will see "Payment not confirmed yet" or, in Order History, a yellow "Card charge pending" banner on the order. Do not charge again and do not send a link. Click "Check payment status" after a minute: it asks Stripe what happened and finishes the record. It never creates a new charge.
7. ## Remove a card
Admins and supervisors can click the trash icon next to a card on the customer's profile and confirm "Remove card". The card is no longer offered or charged. The customer can save a card again by paying online or by phone.

## What happens next

- Every charge of a saved card on an invoice sends the customer a receipt by email, and by text message when they have a phone number and did not reply STOP. This includes a charge confirmed later with "Check payment status".
- A charge from Create New Order marks the invoice as paid and the order confirmation goes to the customer after the charge.
- While a card charge is being confirmed, the invoice total and the card fee cannot be changed. This keeps the charged amount and the invoice the same.
- How the customer agrees: on the online booking page the sentence about keeping the card sits under the Terms checkbox; on a payment link it shows above the pay button; by phone you read it and record the answer. Dumpster Controls keeps the exact sentence, the date and, by phone, who took the call.
- Paying by payment link now always keeps the card for your company, even when the customer already had a card saved with another company or has no email on file.

## Troubleshooting

### I do not see "Charge card on file".

It only shows for a customer who pays per order (not a commercial account), when Stripe is connected, the total is at least $10, the customer can receive the receipt (an email, or a phone number that did not reply STOP to texts) and there is an active, unexpired saved card on their profile. The option is being turned on for companies in stages.

### The customer has a card but it is not offered.

The card may have been declined for this invoice, blocked by the bank (lost, stolen, expired) or by a dispute, or removed. Send a payment link instead: when the customer pays, the new card is saved.

### What does "Credit card" mean in Edit Payment?

It records that the invoice was paid by card (for example a card taken outside Dumpster Controls). Choosing it does not charge anything. To charge a saved card, use "Charge card on file" or "Charge Card on File" in Order History.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Dumpster Controls really free?

Yes. The software is free: dispatch, online booking, the driver app, invoicing, the Tresha AI assistant and every other feature, with no monthly fee, no trial period and no credit card to sign up. The only cost on the free plan is optional card processing when a customer pays by card through the platform: 2.99% plus $3.99 per transaction on the free plan. An optional Unlimited plan at $169 per month lowers that to 2.99% plus $0.30. Prices as published on dumpstercontrols.io/pricing on 2026-09-23.

### Do you charge per driver, per truck or per order?

No. There is no per-driver, per-truck, per-user or per-order fee, and no order limit. A company with one truck and a company with twenty pay the same for the software: nothing.

### Is there a contract?

No. There is no contract, no minimum term and no setup fee. You create the account yourself, and on the free plan there is nothing to cancel because nothing is billed. The optional Unlimited plan is billed month to month.

### Which countries and languages are supported?

Dumpster Controls serves hauling companies in the United States and Canada. The app interface and the Tresha AI assistant are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The public pages, such as the blog, the help center and the landfill finder, are in English.

### How do I switch from another dumpster software?

Create a free account at dumpstercontrols.io/login, with no sales call and no credit card. Then import your customers from a CSV file using the template provided in the app; past orders can also be imported from a CSV. Container sizes and pricing are set up in Settings. The landfill database, with 1,750 active US and Canadian landfills as counted on 2026-10-01, is already loaded, so disposal sites do not need to be typed in. Step-by-step guides are at dumpstercontrols.io/help.
