# Landfill tipping fees by state (2026)

What it costs to dump a ton of trash or construction debris in each of the 50 states, in one table, next to the facility rates our team has checked against the operator's own rate sheet.

By Dumpster Controls Data Desk Updated September 28, 2026 5 min read

Landfill tipping fees in the United States run from about **$22 to $150 per ton** for municipal solid waste, depending on the state. Across the 50 state ranges we compile, the median midpoint is **$47.50 per ton** for MSW and $56 for construction and demolition debris. Mississippi is the cheapest state and Connecticut the most expensive, about 4 times as much per ton.

A tipping fee is what a landfill or transfer station charges to take a load. The hauler pays it on every trip, so it sets the floor under every dumpster price, weight allowance and overage charge in the country.

National and regional averages exist. Haulers, reporters and counties also need the state level, in one table they can all read the same way, and that is what this page is. The ranges come from the EREF 2024 tipping fee analysis, state environmental agencies and prices reported by companies that use Dumpster Controls. Next to them we publish the rates our team has verified one facility at a time.

## Verified facility rates

The state table is a compilation of ranges. The number a driver pays is one facility's rate, so our team also checks facilities one at a time against the operator's or the county's own published rate sheet. So far 674 facilities have been checked out of 1,750 in our database, and 638 of them publish a rate per ton.

*Where are the verified rates, and what do they show?

**Read it:** California holds 59 of the 638 verified per ton rates, so this is not a national sample yet. Each row is the rates we checked in that state.*

The Environmental Research and Education Foundation put the national average MSW tipping fee at $62.28 per ton in 2024, from its survey of 351 landfills, a 10 percent increase over 2023. Our two medians sit below that, and the difference is method, not error. A median of state midpoints counts Wyoming the same as California; a national average weighted toward the large markets leans toward the expensive ones. Our verified median leans the other way, because most verified facilities are in the Southeast so far.

## Why tipping fees vary by state

Disposal capacity, land prices, distance to the nearest site, state rules and local competition all move the gate rate. Where capacity is short, the rate climbs.

**Northeast.** The most expensive region. Of the 11 states with a midpoint above $75 per ton, 8 are in the Northeast: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and Maine. Limited landfill capacity and strict disposal rules push costs up.

**Southeast.** Moderate to low. Florida runs $38 to $68 per ton, and Alabama and Mississippi are among the cheapest states for disposal. Population growth in Georgia and North Carolina is putting upward pressure on fees.

**Midwest.** Mostly affordable. Illinois and Minnesota sit higher than their neighbors, with the demand around Chicago and Minneapolis.

**West.** The widest spread. California runs $70 to $110 per ton, with strict rules and little new landfill permitting, while Idaho, Wyoming and Montana stay among the cheapest in the country.

At the low end, 12 states have a midpoint under $40 per ton: Mississippi, Idaho, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming, Arkansas, Kansas, Alabama, Iowa and Montana.

## Methodology

**Where the numbers come from.** The state ranges were compiled on March 16, 2026 from the EREF 2024 Analysis of MSW Landfill Tipping Fees (351 landfills), state environmental agency reports and prices reported by companies that use Dumpster Controls. The summary figures on this page are calculated from that table: the median of the 50 state midpoints and the lowest and highest values in any range.

**Verified rates.** 674 facilities have been checked against the operator's or the county's own rate sheet; 638 publish a rate per ton and 72 per cubic yard. Figures as of September 28, 2026. The Landfill Finder lists 1,750 active landfills and transfer stations, counted on October 1, 2026.

**How it is updated.** Verified rates and the facility count are rebuilt every month. Rates reported by haulers are reviewed by our team before they change public data, and each carries its source and date.

**Limits.** These are published rates and approximate ranges, not quotes. Surcharges, minimums, special waste and fuel fees change the bill. Confirm with the facility before the truck leaves.

## How to use this data

Haulers

### Price the weight from the local rate

Set the weight allowance and the overage per ton from the fee at the facility you actually use, not a national figure. Find it in the [Landfill Finder](https://dumpstercontrols.io/landfills) before the truck leaves.

Journalists and researchers

### Quote the right number for the claim

Use the state ranges to compare states, the verified rates for a statement about one facility, and the date shown with each. The ranges are approximate; say so when you quote them.

Counties and public works

### See where your gate rate sits

Compare your rate with the state range and your neighbors. If your facility shows an old rate or none, send the current rate sheet and we update it after review.

Facility operators

### Report a price update

Open your facility in the [Landfill Finder](https://dumpstercontrols.io/landfills) and use "Suggest an edit" (it takes a free account), or send the new rate sheet to the address below.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a landfill tipping fee?

A tipping fee, or gate fee, is what a landfill or transfer station charges to accept a load of waste. Most facilities charge per ton on a scale; some charge per cubic yard, and many add a minimum charge per trip. It is the largest variable cost in a dumpster rental, because the hauler pays it on every load.

### How much does it cost to dump a ton of trash at a landfill?

Across the 50 state ranges we compile, the median midpoint is $47.50 per ton for municipal solid waste and $56 per ton for construction and demolition debris. The full range runs from $22 per ton in Mississippi to $150 in Connecticut. The Environmental Research and Education Foundation put the national average MSW tipping fee at $62.28 per ton in 2024.

### Which state has the cheapest and the most expensive landfill tipping fees?

Mississippi has the lowest range, $22 to $40 per ton for MSW. Connecticut has the highest, $95 to $150 per ton, about 4 times the Mississippi midpoint. 11 states have a midpoint above $75 per ton.

### Are these the exact prices a landfill will charge me?

No. The state figures are approximate ranges for comparison, and each facility sets its own rate. Before a truck leaves, confirm the current rate with the facility or look it up in the free Landfill Finder, where rates our team has verified against the operator's own rate sheet are labeled.
