Dispatchers ask three questions all day: where are my trucks, where are my cans, and where does the next load go. Generic GPS trackers answer the first one, for a monthly fee per vehicle, and know nothing about the other two. Dumpster Controls answers all three on one live map, built into the same free platform that runs booking, dispatch and invoicing. The screenshot above is not a mockup: it is a real Florida operation running on Dumpster Controls, with two trucks on the road, containers color-coded across the region and the landfill layer on.

    What is dumpster fleet tracking?

Dumpster fleet tracking is a live operational map with three layers. The truck layer shows every truck with the driver's avatar and live GPS position from the free driver app, refreshing roughly every 30 seconds while on shift, with stale positions visually flagged. The container layershows every dumpster at the address where it physically sits, color-coded by status: active rentals, pickups due, scheduled deliveries. The landfill layer plots the 2,861-facility U.S. landfill database around your routes, so the next dump run is a glance, not a search.

Because the map lives inside the operating platform, every marker is actionable: click a can to open the order, click a truck to see the driver's day, click a landfill to set it as a destination. Tracking is not a report you check later; it is the surface you dispatch from.

    The Free Forever Promise

    Free means free. Forever.

Fleet tracking in 2026 is free: live driver GPS, the container map and the landfill layer are included with unlimited trucks and drivers. GPS-hardware vendors charge per vehicle, per month, for a map that does not know what a dumpster is.

How we make money: only when you opt in, and the numbers are public. The software is 100% free with unlimited orders and no per-order software fee. If you choose to collect a customer’s card payment through Dumpster Controls, the processing fee is 2.99% + $3.99 per card transaction on the free plan, or 2.99% + $0.30 (the standard Stripe rate) on the optional $169/month Unlimited plan. Take payment by cash, check, Zelle or any other way and you pay nothing at all. Our marketplace, the Dumpster Net Hub, charges zero marketplace fees. Run your own business your way and you never pay to use the software. It’s the only model that lets a 1-truck owner-operator run on the same software as a 50-truck fleet.

Driver tracking without the surveillance-vendor price tag

The driver's phone is the tracker: the free iOS/Android app reports position while on shift, and stops with the shift. Dispatchers see who is where, route progress leg by leg, and the estimated finish time of each driver's day. Positions older than a few minutes turn gray, so nobody dispatches against stale data. Routes you can read at a glance

Every leg of a driver's route is color-coded by destination: green to a delivery, orange to a pickup, brown to the landfill, black on the return to HQ, with dashed lines when the truck is running empty. Completed stops leave the map so the eye goes straight to what is left. See route optimization →

The container layer: where every can really is

Fleet tracking answers "where are my trucks"; the container layer answers the more expensive question: "where are my cans." Every unit appears at its current address with status color, and pairs with per-unit serial tracking for the full history of each container. See container tracking →

Dumpster Controls vs. generic GPS fleet tracking

Telematics platforms are excellent at vehicles: diagnostics, dashcams, driver safety scores. They are the wrong tool for running a dumpster operation, and they charge per vehicle for it. The factual difference:

    Feature
    Dumpster Controls
Generic GPS trackers (Samsara, Verizon Connect, etc.)
Software cost$0, unlimited trucks and driversMonthly fee per vehicle, often with hardware contracts
GPS hardware requiredNone: the driver's phoneInstalled tracker per vehicle

Connected to dispatch, booking and invoicing✅ Same platform❌ Separate system
    Color-coded route legs by destination
Engine diagnostics / dashcams❌ (use telematics if you need this)

The direct answer on dumpster fleet tracking

Busy owners want the answer first and the detail after. Here is the short version, written to be quoted:

Q: How do dumpster companies track their trucks and dumpsters in real time?

A: Purpose-built platforms track both on one live map: the truck layer uses the driver's phone as the GPS unit (no hardware), and the container layer shows every dumpster color-coded by status at its real address, alongside a landfill layer. Dumpster Controls includes this fleet tracking free with unlimited trucks and drivers, connected to dispatch, booking and invoicing; generic GPS platforms charge per vehicle and track only the truck, not the cans or the operation.
