How to pick the right customer type in Dumpster Controls

Residential, contractor, broker and commercial profiles carry different fields and, above all, pay differently: residential and contractor customers pay each order on its own, while broker and commercial customers are billed on account. This guide lists what each type stores so you choose well. Picked the wrong one? You can change it later: see "How to change a customer's type".

## Residential: home delivery details
Under "More details (optional)": "Property Type" ("Single Family", "Townhouse", "Condo", "Other"), "Gate Code", "Preferred Contact" ("Call", "Text", "Email"), "Payment Preference" ("Card", "Cash", "ACH"), and the "HOA Community" switch. Each order is paid on its own.
## Contractor: company billing details
Under "More details (optional)": "Billing Email", "Net Terms" ("Net 7", "Net 15", "Net 30", "Net 45", "Net 60", "Due on receipt", "Custom"), "Default Dumpster Size" ("10 Yard" through "40 Yard"), "AP Contact Name", "AP Contact Phone" and the "PO Required" switch. Each order is paid on its own, with the company details on the invoice. An existing contractor can later be moved to account billing with "Bill on account" in the customer drawer.
## Broker: billed on account, with commissions
The "Commercial account details" section is always open: account status, credit limit and the "Billing cycle and terms" box, then "Billing Email", "Payment Terms", "AP Contact Name", "AP Contact Phone", "Broker License Number (optional)", "Commission %", "Default Markup %", and the "PO Required" and "Commission Agreement" switches.
## Commercial: billed on account
The same "Commercial account details" section, then "Billing Email", "Net Terms", "Default Dumpster Size", "AP Contact Name", "AP Contact Phone" and "PO Required". Orders go on a periodic statement instead of being charged one by one.
## Add sites, prices and documents for account customers
Broker and commercial customers also get "Job sites, prices and documents": job sites with their own delivery address, negotiated prices by size, and documents such as the signed service agreement or a tax exemption certificate (PDF, JPG, PNG or WEBP, up to 10 MB).
## Change the type later
Open the customer and, in "Overview", click "Change type" under "Customer type". The window says what happens to billing before you save. The full walkthrough is in "How to change a customer's type".

What happens next

The type drives the row icon and badge on the Customers page, the "Contractors" metric card, the "Type" filter, and which detail sections appear in the profile drawer.

Troubleshooting

Which type should a construction company be?

Pick "Commercial" if they expect a monthly (or weekly) statement and pay by check or transfer. Pick "Contractor" if they pay each order on its own.

Can a customer billed on account become residential?

Not in this version. A customer on account can move between contractor, commercial and broker, and keeps being billed on account. That is why opening an account through "Change type" asks you to confirm first.

What else changes when the type changes?

The fields of the new profile, the drawer sections, and who can use the customer portal (commercial customers, and customers billed on account that are not brokers). Anyone who loses that right has the portal access removed. Past orders and invoices keep their amounts and how they were billed. Is Dumpster Controls really free?

Yes. The entire app is free for any company at any fleet size: dispatch, online booking, the driver app, invoicing, the Tresha AI assistant and every other feature, with no monthly fee, no trial period and no credit card to sign up. The only cost on the free plan is optional card processing when a customer pays by card through the platform: 2.99% plus $3.99 per transaction on the free plan. The entire app is free; an optional $169 per month plan lowers that to 2.99% plus $0.30 and adds a Sponsored spotlight in the public company directory. Do you charge per driver, per truck or per order?

No. There is no per-driver, per-truck, per-user or per-order fee, and no order limit. A company with one truck and a company with twenty pay the same for the software: nothing.

Is there a contract?

No. There is no contract, no minimum term and no setup fee. You create the account yourself, and on the free plan there is nothing to cancel because nothing is billed. The optional $169 lower card rate plan is billed month to month.

Which countries and languages are supported?

Dumpster Controls serves hauling companies in the United States and Canada. The app interface and the Tresha AI assistant are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The public pages, such as the blog, the help center and the landfill finder, are in English.

How do I switch from another dumpster software?

Create a free account at dumpstercontrols.io/login, with no sales call and no credit card. Then import your customers from a CSV file using the template provided in the app; past orders can also be imported from a CSV. Container sizes and pricing are set up in Settings. The landfill database, with 1,750 active US and Canadian landfills as counted on 2026-10-01, is already loaded, so disposal sites do not need to be typed in.
