How to protect your company from the triangulation card scam

Triangulation fraud is one of the most common card scams hitting dumpster rental companies. A scammer books a real rental from you using a stolen credit card, the service is genuinely delivered, and weeks later the real cardholder disputes the charge. The bank almost always sides with the cardholder, so you lose the payout, the dispute fee is charged, and you already paid for fuel and dump fees. This article explains how the scam works, what Dumpster Controls blocks automatically, and the habits that keep you out of it.

## Understand how the scam works
The scammer places an online booking with a stolen card, often under a fake name that does not match the cardholder. In the classic triangulation variant, the scammer also poses as a middleman: they charge a real end customer by cash or transfer app, and use the stolen card to pay you. The dumpster really gets delivered and used, which makes everything look normal, until the real cardholder sees the charge and files a fraud dispute. Card networks protect cardholders in stolen-card cases, so delivery proof rarely wins.
## Know what Dumpster Controls blocks for you
Every online card payment is screened before capture: Stripe Radar risk scoring plus our own checks (card behavior, IP distance to the service address, disposable emails). High-risk payments are HELD: the order is created as "Under Review" and no truck rolls until the Dumpster Controls risk team verifies and approves the payment. Extreme-risk payments are canceled automatically. When Stripe detects fraud on a card that already paid (an early fraud warning, which usually arrives days before the dispute), you get an instant push alert telling you to hold the delivery.
## Watch the red flags on new customers
The pattern repeats: a rush request for the earliest possible delivery; the name or email on the order not matching the cardholder or looking auto-generated; the customer avoiding phone contact and keeping everything in text; a service address far from the billing area; no price questions at all. One red flag can be innocent; two or more deserve a phone call before the truck leaves.
## Verify by phone before first-time high-value deliveries
A 2 minute call breaks most triangulation setups. Call the number on the order, confirm who is paying and with which card (last 4 digits), and confirm the delivery details. A legitimate customer answers easily; a scammer stalls, deflects to text, or the "customer" at the address turns out to be paying someone else in cash, which is the scam in plain sight.
## Keep the payment inside the platform
Payments made through your Dumpster Controls booking page or payment links are screened and documented end to end (card checks, timestamps, GPS-stamped delivery photos). Payments taken outside the platform have none of that protection and leave you with nothing to show the bank.
## If you get a fraud warning alert, act the same day
When the app warns you that a payment received a fraud signal, hold the delivery and review the order. If the service was not provided yet, canceling and refunding immediately usually avoids the chargeback and its fee entirely. If the dumpster is already on site, collect it as soon as possible and gather your records.

Troubleshooting

The service was really delivered. How can it still be fraud?

Because the person who received the service is not the person who paid. The cardholder whose card was stolen never authorized anything, and card network rules protect them. Delivery proof shows the service happened; it does not prove the cardholder approved the charge.

Why not just block all risky-looking orders?

Because most flagged orders are legitimate. That is why elevated-risk payments are held for a quick human verification instead of auto-canceled: a short review protects you without turning good customers away.

No. There is no per-driver, per-truck, per-user or per-order fee, and no order limit. A company with one truck and a company with twenty pay the same for the software: nothing.

Is there a contract?

No. There is no contract, no minimum term and no setup fee. You create the account yourself, and on the free plan there is nothing to cancel because nothing is billed. The optional $169 lower card rate plan is billed month to month.

Which countries and languages are supported?

Dumpster Controls serves hauling companies in the United States and Canada. The app interface and the Tresha AI assistant are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The public pages, such as the blog, the help center and the landfill finder, are in English.

How do I switch from another dumpster software?

Create a free account at dumpstercontrols.io/login, with no sales call and no credit card. Then import your customers from a CSV file using the template provided in the app; past orders can also be imported from a CSV. Container sizes and pricing are set up in Settings. The landfill database, with 1,750 active US and Canadian landfills as counted on 2026-10-01, is already loaded, so disposal sites do not need to be typed in.
