A roll-off company sells the same thing every day: one container, delivered on a date, picked up on another date, emptied in between at a landfill that charges by the ton. The whole business is that loop, repeated, and the reason generic business software fails at it is that none of those tools knows a delivery today implies a pickup in seven days and a dump run after that. Software for roll-off companies is judged on how well it holds that loop for every active order at once, and this page is the checklist we would use to buy it, written by the people who built one that is free.
If your customers call you a dumpster company, the same guide with that vocabulary is at software for dumpster companies. Both pages describe one product.
The six modules, and what each has to do for roll-off
Start with the order, because everything hangs off it. A roll-off order carries the customer, the delivery address, the size, the rental period, the debris type, the price and the placement note, and after creation it should hold its own delivery task, its pickup task, its photos grouped by moment, its payment breakdown and its timeline. Extensions, swaps and overweight fees are edits to that record. If the software you are testing creates a second order for a swap with no link back to the first, billing questions three weeks later will be answered from memory.
Dispatch is the module that decides whether the day fits in the day. Test it with your own Tuesday: an Unassigned pool, one lane per driver, cards dragged in running order, and a map that draws the legs with a loaded truck solid and an empty truck dashed. The driver should get the assignment as a push notification and a text, without a call. The details are in dumpster dispatch software.
The driver app is where most switches succeed or fail, and it deserves its own field test rather than a demo. A roll-off driver does 12 to 25 stops a day across four kinds of work, so the app has to model delivery, pickup, landfill run and swap as different flows with different photo slots, and it has to read the scale receipt so the disposal cost reaches the order. On a tablet mounted in the cab, the same app becomes Truck Tablet Mode, paired to the truck instead of a person, with drivers switching by PIN. The driver's view is at roll-off driver app, and the feature-by-feature page, GPS and offline behavior included, at dumpster driver app.

Containers are the asset, and the software should know each one by serial, with a status, a condition and the order it sits on. Sizes carry the pricing, the included tonnage and the per-ton overage. The roll-off container software page walks the whole cycle from empty to full and back.
Landfills are the cost, and a roll-off company's margin is made or lost at the scale house. The software should hold the landfill database with hours and a tipping fee estimate, let the driver pick the closest site from the cab, and take the net weight and total off the receipt photo. The public side of that database covers 2,916 US landfills under an open license, and a curated set of Canadian facilities across the provinces.
Invoicing closes the loop: the invoice is generated from the order, goes out by email and SMS with a payment link, reminders run on a schedule, and the card can be saved for the overweight fee that comes after the dump. Net profit, margin per order and unpaid invoices should be one screen, which is the screenshot at the top of this page.
Free means free. Forever.
All six modules are on the free plan, with unlimited orders, trucks, drivers, containers and users, and unlimited SMS, email and push notifications.
How we make money: only when you opt in, and the numbers are public. The software is 100% free with unlimited orders and no per-order software fee. If you choose to collect a customer’s card payment through Dumpster Controls, the processing fee is 2.99% + $3.99 per card transaction on the free plan, or 2.99% + $0.30 (the standard Stripe rate) on the optional $169/month Unlimited plan. Take payment by cash, check, Zelle or any other way and you pay nothing at all. Beyond that, our revenue comes from the optional Unlimited plan and from equipment partners and sponsors advertising in the app and on our public directory; our marketplace, the Dumpster Net Hub, charges zero marketplace fees. Run your own business your way and you never pay to use the software. It’s the only model that lets a 1-truck owner-operator run on the same software as a 50-truck fleet.
Roll-off company software: what to check by company size
The checklist changes with the size of the company, because the pain moves. A one-truck operator loses jobs on the phone; a four-truck company loses cans; a company with two yards loses the margin between what it charged and what the landfill cost. The table is the same product read from those three chairs.
| Feature | What hurts | What to verify in the software | Free plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 truck, owner drives | Jobs lost while driving | Online booking with price shown before checkout; order lands in dispatch complete | |
| 2 to 5 trucks | Cans nobody can find | Units by serial, QR scan at delivery, Late status computed from the date | |
| 5+ trucks or two yards | Margin unknown until month end | Landfill receipt read into the order; Orders P&L with cost and margin per order | |
| Any size | Money re-keyed into accounting | One-way export of customers, invoices, payments and refunds to QuickBooks Online | |
| Any size | Overflow orders turned away | Dumpster Net Hub marketplace to sell or take orders (United States only for now) |
Roll-off dumpster business software
The "business software" search is the owner asking about money rather than trucks, so the test is the Finances page after a real month. In Dumpster Controls net profit is the hero number, then Received, Invoiced, Unpaid and Expenses against the previous period, then Orders P&L with revenue, fees, costs, profit and margin per order. The Trucks page keeps the registration, insurance and odometer checklist and a maintenance log with a shortcut that posts a repair to Finances as an expense. A public REST API reads orders, customers and estimates and sends signed webhooks when an order is created, changes status or gets paid, for companies that run their own website or CRM alongside. The owner's view is written up in dumpster business software.

What roll-off software costs, and why this one is free
Most roll-off platforms charge a monthly fee, often per truck or per user, and some sell the driver app as an add-on; the published prices of each vendor, dated and sourced, are collected at dumpster rental software cost. Dumpster Controls charges nothing for the software at any fleet size. The company earns only when a customer pays by card through the platform, at 2.99% + $3.99 per transaction, or 2.99% + $0.30 for companies on the optional $169 per month Unlimited plan; cash and check orders cost nothing. The full breakdown, including Canadian rates in CAD, is on the pricing page.
