iCANS vs Docket: which dumpster software should you choose?

A fair comparison of two vendors, from their own pages, with the URL and the date on every line. Where iCANS wins, where Docket wins, and where Dumpster Controls fits at $0.

iCANS publishes its price, $99 or $159 a month with a 7-day trial you start yourself, and sells to roll-off and junk removal companies. Docket does not publish a price, sells through a demo, and since its March 2026 rebrand covers commercial front-load and residential routes as well as roll-off, with an in-house AI router, IronRouteAI, headlined on its top plan. If you want to know the bill before the sales call, iCANS. If you run more than roll-off, or want route creation that weighs dump fees and driver wages, Docket, once you have the quote.

The two overlap more than either markets: both have QuickBooks Online, online ordering, a driver app in both stores and text notifications with a monthly cap (1,000 on iCANS Plus; 500 or 1,000 on Docket). Neither publishes API documentation, checked 2026-08-24, and neither has a free plan. Dumpster Controls is the free third option, and it is described near the end of this page rather than in the table's headline.

"Not found" means we looked on that date at the URLs listed and did not find it, which is not proof that a capability does not exist. Prices are quoted in the vendor's own words. Where iCANS wins

The price is on the page. $99 for Base, $159 for Plus, unlimited drivers and orders on both, a 7-day trial that needs no card, and an account that pauses instead of billing if you do not subscribe. Docket's pricing page names three plans and no dollar amount. For a small company that budgets before it buys, that is the whole decision.

QuickBooks runs both ways. iCANS documents an automatic two-way sync covering clients, invoices, payments, refunds, voids and tax rates. Docket's own support article describes its integration as primarily one-way, with Docket as the source of truth and syncing done manually through sync buttons or batch actions. A bookkeeper who edits inside QuickBooks will notice the difference in the first month.

There is more AI in the entry plan. iCANS advertises an assistant called The New Guy (a May 2026 press release says it runs on Claude), AI-assisted route building, and on Plus an AI Review Filter that routes low ratings to private feedback and drafts the Google review for happy customers. Docket's AI is IronRouteAI, a router, and it is headlined on Pro Plus.

A customer portal for commercial accounts is included on both iCANS plans. Docket's plan rows list a messaging portal and an online shopping cart; we did not find a commercial customer portal named on its pricing page.

Where Docket wins

Docket is not only a roll-off product any more. On 2026-03-02 it became Docket Waste Software and added commercial front-load and residential trash routes. A hauler with a front-load truck and a roll-off truck gets one system; iCANS is built for roll-off and junk removal only.

IronRouteAI weighs the costs a dispatcher actually argues about: dump fees, materials, bin sizes, distance, fuel, driver wages and overtime thresholds. It shipped publicly at the end of 2025 after about a year in beta with over 100 customers. iCANS describes AI-assisted route building without publishing what it weighs.

The integration list is longer: Samsara, Verizon Connect, Mailchimp and Dumpsters.com are plan rows, alongside a local phone number and a hosted WordPress website with drag-and-drop templates in the Grow and Pro plans. iCANS publishes QuickBooks Online, Tiger Payment Solutions and website integration.

Docket publishes its card rates, 3.0% + 30c on Grow and 2.8% + 30c on Pro, with ACH at 1%. iCANS says card and ACH fees through Tiger Payment Solutions are billed per transaction and does not print the rate. Docket also publishes release notes on its support site; iCANS has no public changelog that we found.

It is the bigger company. Docket has been part of ServiceCore since May 2023, a Denver company founded in 2015 that raised $54 million in 2022. iCANS describes itself as bootstrapped. Size cuts both ways, but for a buyer who wants a vendor with a support organization and a sales-led implementation, it is a real difference.

Where the table does not settle it

Dispatch boards, driver apps, container tracking, online ordering and invoicing exist on both products and, by their own descriptions, work. A checkbox does not say whether the implementation is good on a Tuesday with two trucks down. The app stores give a small signal: iCANS's iOS app has 4 ratings and Docket's has 30, both tiny samples, so we quote the counts and draw no conclusion from them. The only reliable test is a week of your real orders on each.

Two things we deliberately do not claim about either vendor: how their interfaces feel, because that is opinion, and whether a capability we did not find exists internally, because absence from a website is not absence from a product. Neither vendor is in any sense abandoned: both publish current pages and sell actively as of the dates in the sources below.

Where Dumpster Controls fits

Dumpster Controls costs $0 per month for any fleet size, with no order, user, truck or feature limit; the company earns only when a customer pays by card, 2.99% + $3.99 per transaction on the free plan or 2.99% + $0.30 on the optional $169 per month Unlimited plan, and cash or check orders carry no fee. That is the whole pricing page. Against iCANS at $1,188 to $1,908 a year and Docket at Not computable, price not published, the software line of the budget goes to zero, and the card line depends on how your customers pay, so compare that line too.

Everything else about it can be checked before you sign up, which is the standard this page holds the other two vendors to. Signup is self-serve: name, email and password, no card and no demo, documented in the public manual, and the whole app runs in English, Spanish or Portuguese, chosen per user. Canadian companies run in Canadian dollars on their own Canadian Stripe account, with a fee of 0.5% + C$2.00 per card transaction on top of Stripe's rate, per the Canada guide. There is a public REST API with an OpenAPI specification at /developers and signed webhooks, capped on the free plan at 10 minutes of API time and 200 leads per day. The landfill database covers 2,916 facilities with tipping fees and is published as open data. And the Dumpster Net Hub lets hauling companies pass whole jobs to each other with no listing fee and no percentage cut.

For a company running its own roll-off or junk removal trucks, that is why Dumpster Controls is the pick over both: the software line goes to zero and nothing sits behind a higher tier. Tresha, the built-in assistant, creates orders and completes deliveries, pickups and landfill runs by chat or voice, behind a confirmation card, on the free plan. A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server at mcp.dumpstercontrols.io/mcp connects the account to Claude on the web, desktop and phone, open to every company, with a ChatGPT app in preparation, as documented at /developers/mcp; none of the other dumpster platforms we track publishes an MCP server (checked 2026-09-28). Support is the same on every plan, with no paid tier: tickets from inside the app at any hour, answered within 24 hours, a public manual of 326 articles, and Tresha around the clock. It is built for roll-off, junk removal and scrap metal, the business this page is written for.
