Switch from iCANS to Dumpster Controls and the software line goes from $99 or $159 a month, at iCANS's published prices, to $0 for any fleet size, replaced by card processing you only pay when a customer pays by card. The move is self-serve: you create the account, bring your customers in by CSV or straight from QuickBooks Online, paste your active rentals, enter your container sizes and prices, and the landfill database is already there. This page lists each step with the manual article that documents it, then the part most switching guides skip: what iCANS does that Dumpster Controls does not, with the source, and the cases where you should stay.

A word on the facts about iCANS. Every one comes from icans.ai, its pricing page or the public app stores, read on 2026-08-23 and re-checked on 2026-09-06 and 2026-09-23; the date is on each line. iCANS is a product from 2024, its apps were updated in August 2026, and it is built by a hauler. Nothing on this page argues that it is old or that it is bad. The argument is about price, self-service and openness, which are the three things you can verify without taking either company's word.

iCANS alternative pricing: what changes in the monthly bill

iCANS publishes two plans: "$99/month" for Base and "$159/month" for Plus, unlimited drivers and orders on both, with a 7-day trial that needs no card. Twelve months is $1,188 or $1,908. Custom text notifications exist only on Plus, capped at "up to 1,000/mo", and card and ACH processing "through Tiger Payment Solutions are billed per transaction" at a rate the page does not print (all from icans.ai/pricing, checked 2026-09-06 and 2026-09-23).

Dumpster Controls publishes one price for the software: $0 per month, at one truck and at fifty, with no order, user or feature limit and no trial clock. The company earns when a customer pays by card, 2.99% + $3.99 per transaction on the free plan, or 2.99% + $0.30 on the optional $169 per month Unlimited plan. Cash, check and bank transfer orders cost nothing. Text, email and push notifications are included with no cap, as of 2026-09-06. The details are on the pricing page.

The one line that can run the other way is card processing. A company that takes 40 card payments a month averaging $500 pays $757.60 in processing on the free plan, or $779 on Unlimited including the subscription; iCANS's rate is not published, so put your own Tiger Payment statement next to those numbers before deciding. In every case you choose whether the customer pays the fee, the company absorbs it or you split it, per the fee handling article.

How to move from iCANS to Dumpster Controls, step by step, with the manual page for each

There is no migration service and no 48-hour promise on this page, because no such service exists. What exists is a public manual of 326 articles and the importers below. Two timing facts are documented and we repeat only those: signing up takes under a minute, and pasted rentals appear on the board in minutes.

1. Create the account and pick your language

Name, email and password. The form has a "Preferred Language" selector for English, Portuguese or Spanish, and the whole app follows it. There is no card, no demo and no confirmation email to wait for before you are in. How to create your account.

2. Register your container sizes and prices

On Registered Inventory, "Add Dumpster" opens a four-step wizard: yardage (2 through 40 yards), how many you own, an image, and prices for 24 hours and the 3, 7, 14 and 30 day tiers plus additional daily charges, then weight included and price per extra ton, fuel surcharge and sales tax. 3. Bring your customers in, by CSV or from QuickBooks

Export your customers from iCANS to a CSV. The Import Customers wizard on the Customers page gives you a template with the exact headers (first name, last name, email, phone, customer type, company, address, city, state, zip, notes), validates every row before anything is written, and skips duplicates by email rather than overwriting. 4. Paste the rentals that are out in the field

The order importer takes rows pasted straight from Excel or Google Sheets, headers first, and recognizes name, phone, address, city, state, zip, date and price with flexible header matching. Up to 200 rows per batch. Imported orders arrive as active rentals waiting pickup, unpaid, with no charges created, so nothing is billed by accident. 5. Landfills: already there

The Nearby Landfills window lists the database filtered to your state and sorted by distance from your company address, with tipping fees, hours and phone. 6. Connect Stripe and share your booking page

7. Invite drivers and the office

Drivers get the native app on iOS or Android and Truck Tablet Mode for a tablet in the cab; office users get roles. Both are free at any headcount. How to add and invite your first driver.

What you keep

QuickBooks Online, with a different direction. Dumpster Controls exports customers, invoices, payments, refunds and company expenses to QuickBooks Online, and imports your existing QuickBooks customers with one click. It does not write back automatically from QuickBooks into the app, and that is a decision rather than a gap: automatic two-way writes on money are where duplicated payments and silently overwritten invoices come from, so the operating system stays the single source of truth and QuickBooks receives. Every export shows in a per-company sync log with its status and the exact error when one happens. Your website. The booking widget embeds on any site, and there is also a free website builder with free hosting if you want to leave the $40 a month hosting behind. Your customers' texts. Confirmations, on-the-way, delivered, payment links and review requests go out by SMS, email and push with no monthly cap. Your data. Orders, customers and estimates are readable through the public API with signed webhooks, documented at /developers.

What is different, on both sides

This is the section to read twice. Each line about iCANS links to the page it came from and the date we read it.

iCANS has a two-way QuickBooks sync; Dumpster Controls exports one way. iCANS documents an automatic two-way sync covering clients, invoices, payments, refunds, voids and tax rates on both plans (icans.ai/software/invoicing-payments, 2026-08-23). Ours is one way by design, explained above, and it also exports company expenses and per-order costs as QuickBooks purchases, which iCANS does not publish.

iCANS has an AI Review Filter; Dumpster Controls has a manual review request. On the $159 Plus plan, iCANS asks for a rating when the order closes, routes low ratings to private feedback and drafts the Google review for happy customers (icans.ai/ai-review-filter, 2026-08-23). We ship a one-tap "Ask for a Google review" from the customer profile and no automation around it.

iCANS has a commercial customer portal on both plans. Recurring contractor accounts can serve themselves (icans.ai/pricing, 2026-08-23). Dumpster Controls has commercial accounts with statements, billing terms and a customer order page reached by text message; it is lighter than a full portal.

iCANS includes guided onboarding; Dumpster Controls is self-serve. Their pricing page commits to setup, customer and inventory imports, QuickBooks configuration and team training (2026-08-23). Here, the importers above and a manual of 326 articles do that work, and support answers tickets within 24 hours.

The AI is different in kind. iCANS advertises an assistant called The New Guy, which a May 2026 press release says runs on Claude, plus AI-assisted route building. Tresha, on Dumpster Controls, creates orders and completes deliveries, pickups and landfill runs by chat or two-way voice, behind a confirmation card, on the free plan. Which one fits depends on whether you want the AI to suggest or to act.

What Dumpster Controls has that iCANS does not publish, checked 2026-08-24 for the API and 2026-08-23 for the rest: a public REST API with an OpenAPI specification (icans.ai/api and /developers return 404), a marketplace where haulers pass whole jobs to each other with no fee, an open database of 2,916 landfills, three languages on every screen, and Canadian dollars on a Canadian Stripe account. iCANS reports operating in the United States and Canada in its own press release; its currency support is not published.

What iCANS includes, and how the switch covers it

QuickBooks: iCANS documents a two-way sync on its entry plan. Dumpster Controls exports one way into QuickBooks Online on purpose, so the order, the invoice and the payment are decided in one place and the books follow, and the export includes expenses.

Reviews, portal and setup: the AI Review Filter is on the $159 iCANS plan; here the Google review request goes out from the order at no charge. Recurring customers get a no-login portal on every order, to track it and ask for an earlier pickup or a paid extension. And instead of weeks of guided onboarding, the account is live the same day, with the public manual, in-app tickets answered within 24 hours on every plan and Tresha answering how-to questions at any hour, for $0 against $1,188 to $1,908 a year.
